A rare and ecologically vital 30-acre wetland in Van Buren Township will be destroyed to make way for a landfill, after Michigan’s EGLE and a review panel approved Waste Management’s permit despite opposition from conservationists and ecologists. The decision highlights serious flaws in the state's wetland permitting process, which overwhelmingly favors development, even at the cost of irreplaceable natural habitats.
