Advocating for the bats of Wayne County

ree

Have you ever noticed a bat zipping through the twilight sky? These nighttime flyers are some of the most important — and underappreciated — mammals in our local ecosystems, as Kim Williams-Guillén explained in Bats of Wayne County, her presentation at the monthly Nerd Nite Ann Arbor. What began as a casual request from the Wayne County Conservation District to help protect an imperiled wetland evolved into a broader program of research and collaboration focused on conserving bats, forests, and wetlands.

Kim concluded her presentation with a heartfelt appeal for attendees to support the Save Sibley Prairie campaign. This 400-acre expanse is one of the last remaining wild landscapes of its kind in Wayne County and plays a vital role in sustaining diverse species — including bats — that depend on its unique habitat.

Kim shared how these habitats and species work together to support a healthy ecosystem for all Michiganders. A scientist and regenerative farmer, Kim has brought years of academic and conservation experience to the effort, including postdoctoral work on bats in Mexico and ongoing citizen science projects in Southeast Michigan.
